Episode 18: The Guru

Over the last two days I had to opportunity to attend a two day seminar with speaker Robert Lieberman.
Lieberman is the director of such films as Fire In The Sky (which he went very in depth into on the second day) Table For Five and D3: The Mighty Ducks. He also directed the upcoming Canadian hockey feature, Breakaway.
As well as film work, Lieberman has also directed of plethora of television programs including Jake 2.0, The Dead Zone, Nikita, Dexter, Brothers & Sisters, Haven, Lost Girl and Eureka.
Over the two days Lieberman spoke on his experience as a director, and the situations that come a long with the job.
The amount of insight I received from this man on things like directing actors, the way to write a script, dealing with internal movie politics and even how to get something read, is unmatched when compared to the last four years I’ve spent in film school.
I can’t help but be appreciative to this man for taking time out of a very hectic schedule to speak to a random group of students who all think they have “it,” I of course being one of those students.
He didn’t pull any punches, yet at the same time managed to reaffirm by belief that working in television (or film if that’s where my path leads) is what I’m supposed to do with my life.
The last two days made my $20,000 a year education worth it and I say thank you Mr. Lieberman, thank you for the invaluable advise you supplied us with this weekend.
